Cancelled Tiber River tourist cruises

first_imgThe company in charge of all Tiber River cruises has suspended operations indefinitely, claiming the waterway is just too dirty.”We’re ashamed of the Tiber’s state of abandonment,” a Rome Boats spokesperson has said.According to the spokesperson, the last time the river was cleaned was in 2008 and Rome City Hall is denying responsibility for the Tiber’s upkeep (a still used 1906 law has deemed the waters of the Tiber as ‘maritime’ and not ‘communal’ and therefore not the city’s responsibility), the AFP reported.Rome Boats has run river cruises along the Tiber, Italy’s third longest river, since 2003, but with the river’s stone embankments now grey with pollution and rubbish collecting at the river bank, the company’s spokesperson said the cruises will not commence “out of respect” for tourists and locals alike.“Everyone can see it since trees along the Tiber are covered in plastic bags and other rubbish every time the river overflows,” the spokesperson said. From the chatter on TripAdvisor the cruises may not be missed as the narrowness of the river and the high embankments don’t recommend themselves to all visitors. The Tiber, itself, however is still rated well, ranking 320 out of the 530 Roman attractions reviewed on the site.Source = e-Travel Blackboard: G. A.
