ABC News(FORT WORTH, TX.) — Loved ones of a Texas woman who was shot to death in her home by a police officer who was sent to check her family’s welfare demanded the officer be immediately fired and arrested and that the federal government take charge of the investigation. The family of 28-year-old Atatiana “Tay” Jefferson, killed early Saturday by a Fort Worth police officer who allegedly fired through a window of her home striking her while failing to identify himself as police, spoke out at a news conference to demand justice. “This man murdered someone. He should be arrested,” said Jefferson’s brother, Adarius Carr, a member of the U.S. Navy. “I’ve served my country for the last 12 years. In that time, I’ve been trained and taught that there are preplanned responses for everything you do. Everything you’re trained about, there’s a way to do things. And when you don’t do it the way you’ve been trained or the way you’ve been taught, you have to answer for that,” Carr said. “The Fort Worth PD cannot investigate themselves. The U.S. Navy is not allowed to do it, they should not be as well.”Lee Merritt, a civil rights attorney representing Jefferson’s family, said the shooting shows that the Fort Worth Police Department is “in need of serious systematic reform.”“Of course this family is calling for the firing of this officer. That’s benign. That’s the least that we should expect,” Merritt said.Merritt said the family is calling on the Department of Justice or the FBI to investigate the killing, adding that the officer, whose name had not been released, should be “vigorously prosecuted.”“We expect this to happen immediately,” Merritt said. “This (the shooting) happened Saturday. Why this man is not in handcuffs right now is a source of continued agitation for this family and for this community, and it must be addressed.”UNACCEPTABLE! The acts of yet another “trained” police officer have resulted in the death of #AtatianaJefferson. Gun downed in her own home. If we are not safe to call the police, if we are not safe in our homes, where can we find peace? We demand answers. We demand justice. pic.twitter.com/UZqHQzPyaW— NAACP (@NAACP) October 13, 2019The shooting unfolded about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday after a neighbor of Jefferson’s called the police department’s non-emergency line to asked that a welfare check be conducted on Jefferson’s home because the lights were on and the back and front doors were open.Lt. Brandon O’Neil said at a news conference Sunday afternoon that two officers were sent to the home on East Allen Avenue. He said the officers arrived at the house at 2:29 am. and parked near Jefferson’s home, but not in front of the residence.O’Neil said the officers walked around the back of the house, and that one of the officers observed a person through the rear window of the home and opened fire.Body-camera footage released by the department shows the officer approaching a rear window of the home with his gun drawn. The officer sees the woman through the window, shouts, “Put your hands up, show me your hands,” and fires one shot.“Perceiving a threat, the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot striking the person inside the residence,” a statement from the police department reads.Responding officers entered the home, located the shooting victim and began providing emergency care.Jefferson died at the scene.O’Neil said the officer who opened fire on Jefferson never identified himself as a police officer.“What the officer observed and why he did not announce ‘police’ will be addressed as the investigation continues,” O’Neil said.Merritt said that Jefferson and her 8-year-old nephew Zion were playing video games when they heard someone in the bushes outside their home and went to a bedroom window to investigate. He said Jefferson stopped her nephew from looking out the window, that she was shot when she peered into the darkness.“It was less than a second,” Merritt said of the shooting. “I had an expert slow it (the body-camera video) down. It was .6 second between the command and the shot. There was no time for them to perceive a threat from a weapon. There was no time for her to respond. It was reckless, deadly behavior.”Fort Worth Police Chief Ed Kraus has scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon to discuss the shooting.Copyright © 2019, ABC Audio. All rights reserved.

On 20 June, Colombia denied negotiating with leaders of criminal gangs responsible for sending cocaine shipments to the United States, by way of Mexico, and for an increase in violence in several areas of the country on account of the control of drug-trafficking routes. U.S. authorities have intensified their efforts in Colombia to combat these illegal organizations, created by former extreme-right-wing paramilitaries. “It’s not true. The administration, of course, is very interested in bringing the criminal gangs to justice, that is, a negotiation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office; if we can do something to facilitate that, we’ll do it very gladly,” Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said. “But there are no negotiations with those groups; there can’t be any. If they surrender, great; that strikes me as very good,” the president specified, speaking to Caracol Radio, denying rumors about talks between his administration and those groups. The so-called ‘criminal gangs’ filled the spaces left behind by the extreme-right-wing paramilitary squads that demobilized amid controversial peace negotiations with the administration of former president Alvaro Uribe. The gangs also took advantage of the dismantling of the Medellín, Cali, and Norte del Valle cartels in joint operations by the Colombian and U.S. authorities. These Colombian organizations send tons of cocaine every month to Central America and Mexico, where a large part of the drugs are purchased by Mexican cartels that then ship them to the United States. Colombia is considered the world’s leading producer of cocaine with around 279 metric tons in 2010, according to the United Nations. Despite progress in the fight against drug trafficking and despite U.S. support, this activity continues to be a lucrative business in Colombia, moving millions of dollars and providing financing to leftist guerrillas who have taken up arms against the state in a conflict that has cost thousands of lives. Since 2000, Colombia has received more than six billion dollars in U.S. aid for its fight against the leftist guerrillas and the drug traffickers. According to the National Police, there are currently seven emerging criminal gangs dedicated to drug trafficking in Colombia, with around 4,100 fighters. The government maintains that unlike the paramilitaries, who had a political and ideological motive for their fight against the country’s guerrillas, the new groups are dedicated only to drug-trafficking activities. By Dialogo June 22, 2011 At this time not only criminal gangs are the reason for insecurity and chaos in our dear country; the FARC, the terrorist group, is devastating Colombia one more time. We’re back to kidnappings, attacks tankers against the civil population, death of country’s soldiers on a daily basis during ambushes, business extortion, etc. The Department of Cauca is being attacked almost daily by these criminals. Dear president Juan Manuel Santos, dear Minister of Defense: God, where is it that you are living? Don’t you know what is going on??????
But other commentators are less optimistic on the clearance by Brussels of the supplementary rules. One large pension fund investor reports that it would not be surprised to see the Commission publish the RTSs as late as October. Another source comes up with a similar timing, “bearing in mind past experience”. Such is sensitivity in the field that both authorities prefer not to be identified. On top of an October estimate, even if further delay of 3-6 months were required for clearance by the Parliament and Council prior to publication in the Official Journal, there does still appear to be time for compliance procedures to be effected. Michael Lewis, MiFID expert at law firm Pinsent Masons, puts the time needed for IT sections to build, implement and test their compliance systems to be in the order of nine months. The work would include coverage of transaction reporting, which would have to be done electronically, he tells IPE.But is there any need to worry about the time factor? “Hard to say,” says Lewis. “It depends on what comes out of ESMA and how substantial the delegated acts are. It is very difficult to crystal ball at this stage.” He does find the present one-year implementation delay to be much welcome in the investor sector. While many of the 28 RTS articles will not require IT system development, Lewis notes that fund managers could well face having to build IT systems to cope with so-called “appropriateness”. He foresees the possibility of an expansion of scope from what exists under MiFID I. He expects that smaller pension funds will have to buy in the necessary IT development for consultancies. It remains to be seen whether such costs could be absorbed internally or passed on to the pension beneficiaries. In the meantime, the issue of derivatives trade transparency, which first arose last year, has been highlighted by PensionsEurope. The institution states that, under current MiFID rules, as drafted by ESMA, pension funds could be discouraged, by the expense, from hedging inflation or interest-rate risk against long-dated liabilities. The liquidity definition for many derivatives sub-classes is of fewer than 10 trades taking place during a one-day period, it adds. It comments that ESMA mis-designated illiquid derivatives sub-classes as liquid. The trades-per-day threshold for determining the liquidity of derivatives sub-classes should be set cautiously. PensionsEurope’s Ursula Bordas questions whether the authority has made a mistake in this matter, which she judges to be not less important than the compliance-timing matter.Taking a similar line on clearing venue calibration of liquidity, Roger Cogan, head of European public policy at the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, says: “We remain concerned that 10 trades per day – one trade per hour – is a very low bar for designating derivatives as liquid for the purpose of applying trade transparency requirements.” At the time of writing, the Commission declined to comment on the matter but has been under pressure from the US authorities to come into line with them on derivatives clearance. Estimates for the publication of the ‘delegated acts’ rules for MiFID II remain unclear, Jeremy Woolfe writesEstimates for when the European Commission will publish the ‘delegated acts’ rules for the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) remain unclear. Indications are that there will be an adequate interval for the IT-compliance exercise by portfolio managers to meet the new implementation date of 3 January 2018.The most optimistic report on the streets of Brussels has it that the European Commission will have completed its work on MiFID’s Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS) before the summer holiday. This would leave a generous margin of time for fund managers to deliver their compliance work on time. Unsurprisingly, when challenged on this timing, the Commission avoids fixing on a firm date. However, it does state: “We are working to finalise the rest of the level II package in the coming months. We will adopt and send RTS for scrutiny [by the Parliament and Council] as soon as they are ready (rather than sending them together).” Cautious to the last, the Commission also covers itself by adding: “At this stage, there is no legal deadline by which the Paris-based European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has to propose amended drafts”.
JEFF SCHORFHEIDE/Herald photoNov. 10 seems like a lifetime ago. That was the day the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team defeated Air Force — which later finished the season at the bottom of the Mountain West Conference — in the regular season debut. Now only one team stands in the Badgers’ way of a WNIT championship: the Wyoming Cowgirls, also from the Mountain West. How fitting.Unfortunately for UW head coach Lisa Stone’s squad, though, they will have to take their 18-3 home record westward to Laramie, Wyo. in front of an already sold-out crowd of about 15,000.The Cowgirls are 15-1 in their home gym this season.”It’s going to be a test of toughness for us,” Stone said. “Mental toughness. We’ve got to go in there, play well, compete, and play like we can play.”Wyoming is led by junior forward Hannah Zavecz, who dropped 28 points in the Cowgirls’ triple overtime victory over Kansas State (a team the Badgers beat 56-53 Nov. 24) in the WNIT semifinals Wednesday night. Zavecz averages 14 points per game and shoots better than 41 percent from 3-point range.Wyoming has two other starters who average in double figures, junior forward Justyna Podziemska and junior guard Jodi Bolerjack, who tally 13.0 and 11.5 points per game, respectively.Stone described Wyoming as a mix between Villanova and UW-Green Bay — a team that defeated the Badgers back on Dec. 13 — because they wind the shot clock down on most possessions and spread the floor on offense.Stone said they’re up for the task.”We’re a lot better than we were [when we played UW-Green Bay],” Stone said. “We’ve got to get to the weak side, pressure the basketball, deny initial passes and defend the drive.”UW freshman forward Mariah Dunham doesn’t think the triple overtime marathon will affect the hosts Saturday.”It doesn’t matter during tournament time,” Dunham said. “Everyone comes out to play.”The Badgers are a little banged up themselves, with leading scorer Jolene Anderson battling a right hip contusion she suffered Wednesday night in the victory over Western Kentucky. Despite feeling quite sore Thursday morning, she assured the media that she would be ready to go come Saturday.Anderson is eight points shy of tying the WNIT record for most points in a single tournament.Fellow backcourt mate Janese Banks knows her team will bring it’s A-game, despite not having played a true road game since Feb. 25, when Wisconsin lost 103-93 at Iowa.”You’ve got to forget about being tired,” Banks said. “There’s one more game; it’s do or die, now or never. We don’t have a choice. It’s time to get this done.”Although the outcome of the game is still up in the air, one thing is for certain: Win or lose, this will be the last game of the season for both teams. And quite frankly, no one on the UW women’s basketball team wants this postseason run to come to an end.Anderson described the entire season in one word: success.”That’s one word that pinpoints it,” Anderson said. “We’ve come a long way from where we started. Our team’s elevated [our game] all year.”Although their season will be over sometime late Saturday afternoon, each player making the trip to Wyoming has one thing on her mind: a WNIT championship.”To end the season with a win would be something special,” Banks said. “I just want to end it on a positive note.”
Black Satellites coach, Sellas Tetteh, says his team let him down in the first half of their semi-finals game against France and that is largely the reason behind the team’s 1-2 defeat.Added to that situation, substitute goalkeeper Michael Sai’s poor anticipation in the second half easily provided the canon fodder for the French to clinch a second defeat over Ghana. In a battle that the French employed brute strength in the combat, the Ghanaians’ usual onslaught was hardly visible in the first half as they struggled to break through the rear of their opponents.Indeed, by the 45th minute mark, the Ghanaians had made only one goal attempt when Frank Acheampong reacted to the French promptings with a header close to the end of the first half. But his ball grazed the upright to the relief of the French bench.Sellas said France exploited the situation and imposed themselves onto the game and even though the Ghanaians tried to react to the situation in the second half it appeared too late as French confidence had already peaked.“For me the whole team played poorly in the first half much against expectation and I do not want to single out any player for blame. Of course, you will say the goalkeeper did poorly with the situation that resulted in the second goal for France, the question is what were the defenders doing at the time”, he queried. Tetteh was, however, quick to congratulate his boys for their resilience that saw them salvage what started as a failed campaign but managed to steer it to the semi-finals.‘’I hope we win the bronze to bring something home”, he added

Facebook1Tweet0Pin0Submitted by Oly Town ArtesiansThe Oly Town Artesians return to action this Saturday night when they host the Snohomish Skyhawks. First kick at The Pavilion at The Evergreen State College is set for 6:30 p.m. It’s 80’s Night as the Artesians celebrate their fifth indoor season with games, prizes, 80’s music and more. Tickets are just $8 for adults, $5 for kids 5-12, seniors and military and kids under five are free. The Artesians enter the game at 0-1-0 after dropping their season opener, 9-6, to Tacoma Narrows FC. TJ O’Connor and Nate Boatright each scored twice in the game and David Cook and Christian Segovia each added goal. Goalkeeper Ryan Perkins played the entire game and kept it nice and close but is now injured and will miss an extended period opening the door for Shelton’s Bradley Hanson to take over between the pipes.Snohomish also suffered an opening game loss, 9-4, on the road to Bellingham United. John Troka scored twice including an impressive bicycle kick goal that temporarily gave them a 2-1 lead over the Hammers. Devin Shull registered a goal and an assist in the loss for the Skyhawks but they also suffered a goalkeeper injury and had to play an emergency keeper for much of the second half. For whatever reason, Oly has historically struggled against the Skyhawks, registering just one win in six games over three seasons. Their lone win came in the last game of the 2015-2016 season, a 10-6 victory featuring goals from current Artesians Matt Stalnik and Kyle Wiese.Saturday night is the first of two December home games for the Artesians. After their game against the Skyhawks, they will travel to Bellingham on December 8th before returning to The Pavilion on December 15 to take on the Tacoma Stars Reserves at 6:30 p.m. They wrap the 2018 portion of their season with a trip to Bremerton to take on the Oly-Pen Force on December 22.Stay up to date with the Artesians by visiting the Oly Town Artesians website, following them on Twitter, and liking them on Facebook.Featured photo credit: Charis Wilson
